  2. Beach laning in Barra
    Barra airport, in Eoligarry to the north of the island, has the worlds only scheduled beach landing flights in the world. It’s well worth visiting the airport to watch the flights land, and there a café to enjoy a cuppa while you wait.
  3. Barra Kisimul Castle and boat
    Home of Clan MacNeil, this medieval castle was built in 15th Century and rebuilt in 1956-1970. Take the short boat ride over to the castle, walk the footsteps of great clan chiefs of past and climb the tower house battlements for spectacular views over Castlebay.

    Craigston, to the west of Barra, is an idyllic place to spot birds of prey and particularly Eagles. Craigston is also a fantastic location for watching Lapwing, Snipe Breed and Redshank, on the surrounding croft land.

    The short walk round the bay has excellent displays, telling the story of the herring industry on Barra. The bay was once filled with so many fishing boats that it was possible to walk across the bay, boat to boat, without getting your feet wet.
