You are here: Home > Our Islands > Island Hopping > Inhabited Islands
With 12 islands in our archipelago, each with their own character and story, you may want to visit them all! But make sure you dont whizz through them, take your time, relax and enjoy!
It is so easy to island hop!
From the south we have Vatersay which is joined to Barra by causeway (note none of our causeways are tidal).
From Barra, you can pop over on the 40 minute ferry journey to Eriskay. All the islands in Uist are connected by causeway Eriskay to South Uist, South Uist to Benbecula, Benbecula to Grimsay, Grimsay to North Uist and North Uist to Berneray.
At Berneray, there is an hours ferry journey to Harris and Scalpay, off the east coast of Harris, is connected by bridge.
Harris and Lewis are connected by road (they are not really two islands, but more of that later!) and finally we have Great Bernera (off the west coast of Lewis) is connected to Lewis by bridge.
We recomend taking a couple of weeks at least to really make the most of this trip! Head over to Our Islands pages and start planning your trip.
