Relatively few mammals are found on these Scottish islands but those that are present are some of the most iconic species of Scottish animals.
The more hilly areas of North and South Uist, North Harris and South Lewis are some of the best places to see red deer in the Outer Hebrides. Red deer often venture onto lower ground during the evenings and early morning so visitors can often spot deer in the Western Isles from roadsides -particularly during the winter months.
October is possibly the best time to see deer in the Outer Hebrides, when the roars of rutting stags echo around the glens. If you are wanting to see mountain hare in the Western Isles, they can be found throughout North Harris and Lewis where their white winter coat blends in perfectly with the lichen covered rocks strewn across the hillsides.
