Bernera Bridge ‘Bridge Over the Atlantic’ which features in The Black Loch, is a bridge linking the isle of Bernara to the Isle of Lewis. Fin takes this road many times throughout The Black Loch.

The islands of Great and Little Bernera inspired many of the stories in Peter May’s Lewis Thrillers.  Great Bernera lies in Loch Roag on the north-west coast of Lewis and is linked to it by a road bridge.  Little Bernera lies immediately to the north of Great Bernera.

“The drive south and west to Bernera took around forty minutes. The island of Great Bernera and her little sister Bernera Beag were like flames in the mouth of the dragon. An illusion created by the deep bites that West and East Loch Roag took out of the west coast of Lewis. Separated from the main island by a narrow strait of water linking the two sea lochs, Great Bernera was reached by a tiny bridge that spanned it. The Bridge over the Atlantic, they called it.”

Extract from The Black Loch by Peter May.
