About

Image: Murdo Macleod

Loch Roag is a large sea loch on the west coast of Lewis. It is divided into East Loch Roag and West Loch Roag

In The Black Loch, this is where the salmon cages are. Caitlin and Iseabail swim out here to film the cages for their activism. It is the site of multiple murders / attempted murders throughout the book.

All Gunn could hear were the cries of gulls flying around the cliffs where they nested, the sound of the sea as the retreating tide sucked it out once more into the Black Loch. Sunlight fell like sparkling jewels on the surface of the water, and beyond the headland he saw a gannet diving for fish somewhere out on East Loch Roag. Life continuing as it had since the beginning of time on this convergence of the Atlantic Ocean and the north-western fringe of the European landmass.
