About

Tucked away in the Calanais landscape not far from the Calanais Standing Stones and Visitor Centre, Calanais III, known locally as Cnoc Fhillibhir Bheag, is a fascinating stone circle made up of 12 standing stones, some reaching up to three metres in height. The stones form a flattened ring with four stones positioned within the circle.

Local tradition links three of the inner stones to the ancient Celtic concept of the Triple Goddess. The lighter stone represents the maiden, the reddish stone the wife or mother, and the darker stone the cailleach, or wise old woman. The fourth stone, standing opposite, is sometimes interpreted as their male counterpart, adding another layer of intrigue to this remarkable site.

Looking south beyond the stones, the hills on the horizon form the outline of a reclining woman known as Cailleach na Mointeach, the Old Woman of the Moors. Some archaeologists suggest this striking natural feature may have influenced the placement of the Calanais monuments.

Before leaving, stand within the small circle of low stones to the left of the path and look towards the horizon. Here, the shape of Cailleach na Mointeach appears perfectly framed by the stone ring, prompting the question: was this alignment intentional, or simply a remarkable coincidence?

As you depart, take a moment to admire the beautifully crafted gate, which depicts the raising of the stones and the movement of the sun, moon and stars across the ancient Hebridean sky.
