About
Valasay Crofthouse – A Peaceful Hebridean Retreat Overlooking the Kyles of Valasay
Imagine waking to changing light across the water, watching wildlife from the comfort of your lounge and setting out on foot along the coast to the white sands of Bosta Beach.
Valasay Crofthouse is a purpose-built, semi-detached croft house in an exceptional position on Great Bernera, overlooking the beautiful Kyles of Valasay. With its own side entrance and driveway, the house provides guests with their own independent access while being semi-detached to the owners' accommodation.
Sleeping up to four guests, Valasay Crofthouse is ideal for couples, families or friends looking for a peaceful base from which to explore Great Bernera and the wider Isle of Lewis.
Views that make the stay special
The setting is one of the defining features of Valasay Crofthouse.
The comfortable lounge looks directly across the Kyles of Valasay, giving you a constantly changing view of the water, islands and surrounding landscape. The master bedroom also overlooks the Kyles, so the scenery is something you can enjoy from the moment you wake.
The changing tides and Hebridean light make the view different every day. Grey seals are regular visitors, dolphins can sometimes be spotted offshore and the surrounding waters attract a wide variety of sea and shore birds throughout the year.
For anyone who loves wildlife, photography, walking or simply watching the world go by, this is a wonderful place to slow down.
A cosy Hebridean home
Inside, Valasay Crofthouse combines traditional character with modern comfort.
The lounge has a distinctive limestone fireplace with an inset multi-fuel stove, creating a warm and inviting focal point after a day outdoors. Wool carpets throughout the house add to the comfortable, homely feel.
The staircase leads directly from the lounge, while the dining kitchen is situated at the rear of the property. The kitchen provides everything needed for a relaxed self-catering stay, with a dishwasher, electric cooker, fridge, freezer and microwave.
There are two bedrooms. The master bedroom enjoys views across the Kyles of Valasay, while the twin bedroom is positioned at the rear of the house. The bathroom has a bath with an over-bath shower.
Linen and towels are provided, and there are washing and drying facilities for guests' convenience.
Full-fibre broadband is available throughout Valasay Crofthouse, so you can stay connected when you need to, while the cosy multi-fuel stove provides the perfect excuse to switch off when you don't.
The house is heated by an energy-efficient air-source heat pump and is powered in part by solar panels with battery storage, combining modern energy efficiency with the traditional character of a Hebridean croft house.
Walk to Bosta Beach
One of the great pleasures of staying at Valasay Crofthouse is being so close to the coastal walking route to Bosta Beach.
The walk takes you through some of Great Bernera's most beautiful scenery, with the sea, hills and open landscape providing a spectacular backdrop. At Bosta, you'll find a beautiful sweep of white sand and the reconstructed Iron Age roundhouse, built on the site of an ancient settlement and offering an insight into island life more than 2,000 years ago.
It is the kind of walk where there is no need to hurry. Stop to look out to sea, watch the birds, explore the coastline or simply enjoy the peace.
A 100-year-old footbridge and protected waters
There is an especially unusual feature close to Valasay Crofthouse.
At the foot of the drive, a charming 100-year-old footbridge crosses a Marine Special Area of Conservation, designated to protect rare marine invertebrates and seaweeds.
As the tide flows beneath the bridge, the sound and movement of the water add to the sense of tranquillity. It is a small but memorable part of the landscape and another reminder that this is a place where nature is very much part of everyday life.
Great Bernera and the Isle of Lewis
Valasay Crofthouse is situated on Great Bernera, an island reached by bridge from the Isle of Lewis.
Great Bernera offers a wonderful combination of coastline, beaches, wildlife and history, while its position makes it an excellent base for exploring further afield.
Spend a day walking and exploring locally, then venture out to discover some of the remarkable attractions of Lewis and Harris, including the Callanish Standing Stones, Gearrannan Blackhouse Village and the Butt of Lewis, as well as countless beaches, coves and coastal walks.
The journey to Great Bernera itself is part of the experience, with wide-open Hebridean landscapes and ever-changing views of sea and sky.
A place to escape
Some holidays are about seeing as much as possible. Others are about finding somewhere that makes you want to stay a little longer.
Valasay Crofthouse is very much the latter.
Wake to views across the Kyles. Spend the day walking the coast to Bosta Beach. Watch for seals, dolphins and seabirds. Return home as the light changes across the water, light the stove and settle into the warmth of the lounge.
There is space to explore, but also space simply to be.
Whether you are looking for a walking holiday, a wildlife escape, a base for discovering the Outer Hebrides or simply somewhere peaceful to get away from everyday life, Valasay Crofthouse offers a comfortable and characterful island retreat.
