Hebridean Way

This major infrastructure project was led by Comhairle nan Eilean Siar (CnES), in partnership with NatureScot (Scottish Natural Heritage), with the cycling route in competed in 2016 and the walking route in 2017.

The project successfully established two major long-distance routes:

The Hebridean Way Cycling Route: A 185-mile trail spanning from Vatersay to the Butt of Lewis.
The Hebridean Way Walking Route: A 156-mile trail linking Vatersay to Stornoway.

Following completion of the infrastructure, Visit Outer Hebrides (VOH) worked in close partnership with (CnES) to develop and launch the Hebridean Way.

Both routes are now established among Scotland’s premier long-distance trails. Known for the outstanding scenery and warm island welcome, they successfully attract well over 5,000 visitors to the Outer Hebrides annually, delivering a significant boost to the local economy.

Funding Partners and Long-Term Operations

The developmenr of the Hebridean Way was made possible through a funding package from CnES, Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) and NatureScot.

To maximize the economic impact for local communities, VOH delivered several key project outcomes:

Established a comprehensive network of walking and cycling-friendly "Pit Stops"
Published an official range of maps and visitor guidebooks
Developed a high-performance website dedicated to the trail

Shared Ongoing Management

Following the successful launch, ongoing responsibilities are split between partners to ensure long-term sustainability:

Visit Outer Hebrides (VOH): Drives continuous destination marketing and promotion.
Comhairle nan Eilean Siar (CnES): Manages physical maintenance of the paths and routes.

Local businesses can directly benefit from the 5,000+ annual trail visitors by registering as an official Hebridean Way Pit Stop. This scheme helps cafes, shops, accommodation providers, and services connect with walkers and cyclists looking for local support.

How to Register Your Business

Existing VOH members can opt into the network immediately through the business portal:

Log into your Visit Outer Hebrides members account.
Select and add the Hebridean Way Pit Stop subscription to your profile.
Once payment is made, we will send you information on how to update your Pit Stop listing.
