About

The Arctic Tern is a summer visitor arriving in May after having made one of the longest known migrations from their wintering grounds in Antarctica. They nest in colonies on islands, in dunes and on rocky coasts. They are very conspicuous around their nesting colonies where they are continuously coming and going, chasing potential predators and alarming others of threats that approach.

Arctic Terns feed largely on sandeels which they will fly long distances in search off. Although the small nesting colony in Fionsabhagh is visible from the road, it is a great place to watch them from. They can also be seen anywhere along the Harris Coastline.
