An Taigh Cèilidh is a Gaelic community and cultural centre with community café and shop which holds regular events connected to Gaelic language and culture in Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis. An Taigh Cèilidh is a not-for-profit grassroots community project, which aims to promote and protect the Gaelic language. The staff are Gaelic-speaking and encourage and support customers to speak Gaelic too with a 10% off hot drinks when ordered in Gaelic. Income surplus goes into Gaelic projects, such as events and books. Events include live music sessions, conversation circles, talks about culture and the environment, and film screenings. An Taigh Cèilidh is based on the Hebridean tradition of the tigh-céilidh or ceilidh house, which were once found in every township and were the centres of social and intellectual life, and provided much needed entertainment after hard work on the croft or sea. Ceilidh houses are within living memory, and we are bringing them back!
