Food and Drink Producers in the Outer Hebrides

As communities with a strong history of crofting, fishing and coming together for great food and drink, our islands are unsurprisingly home to some high quality Outer Hebrides food producers offering local specialities and delicacies from the Western Isles.

Surrounded by bountiful seas, there are a number of seafood suppliers in the Outer Hebrides offering amazing fresh fish and seafood caught in the waters on and around our islands.

While some of the catch of the day graces the tables of island restaurants and eateries, farmed and wild fish are also sourced locally by the Outer Hebrides smokehouses that use methods including traditional peat smoking to prepare Western Isles delicacies including whisky-cured and hot and cold smoked salmon, smoked scallops, smoked lobster, smoked sea trout and Stornoway Kippers. Stornoway Smokehouse is an example of traditional Hebridean fish smoking where this family run smokehouse have been following the 150 year old process of smoking their products..

Local butchers in the Outer Hebrides provide amazing locally reared meat and game, as well as keeping island traditions alive with the production of Scottish specialities such as Stornoway Black Pudding, which has recently won protected status and, as such, can only be sourced from the Western Isles. Other delicacies unique to the islands include wild goose which is sustainably sourced in Uist and only available to buy in MacLeans Bakery & Butchery in Benbecula and in selected restaurants in Uist.

Traditional crofters work side by side with organic growers to offer fresh Outer Hebrides produce at farmers markets, community and farm shops across our islands, while artisans create everything from cakes to condiments and pickles to preserves to offer for sale to those interested in doing a bit of food shopping in the Western Isles.
