About
Rodel House: Exclusive Georgian Escape on the Isle of Harris At the southern tip of the Isle of Harris stands Rodel House, an elegant restored Georgian home overlooking a private harbour and the Little Minch to Skye. Built in 1781 by Captain Alexander MacLeod, this is not a hotel but a private residence available for exclusive hire, offering discerning guests an authentic Hebridean experience.
Sleeping 8 guests plus 2 children, Rodel House provides four beautifully appointed bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms, plus a bunk room that the kids will love. The restoration honours the original vision with Siberian larch windows, reclaimed Georgian pine, unlacquered brass, and tweed throughout. All design colours were chosen to match elements of the island. One bedroom is perhaps the world's first bedroom wallpapered in tweed. Communal Spaces The gathering room downstairs opens through tall windows overlooking Skye. The drawing room upstairs offers welcoming space by the peat fire. The captain's room provides a smaller, quieter retreat. The well equipped kitchen is yours for self catering, or a resident chef can source island ingredients: morning caught fish, island lamb and venison, vegetables from local crofts. Christopher can arrange guided walks, fishing trips, boat excursions to St. Kilda, and private visits to the Isle of Harris Distillery in nearby Tarbert, where The Hearach whisky and Isle of Harris Gin are produced. Location and Landscape Within walking distance of St. Clement's Church (built 1520), where Alasdair Crotach MacLeod's tomb lies beneath medieval carvings.
Luskentyre Beach, pale shell white sand and turquoise water, lies 35 minutes away. November brings bronze light; summer offers near endless days. Spring lambs and seabirds; autumn turns the landscape gold. It is a house for all seasons. The Story Captain MacLeod invested his trading fortune here. Decades later, the Countess of Dunmore conceived the Harris Tweed industry while living in this house. In 2013, Anderson 'Burr' Bakewell, founder of the Isle of Harris Distillery, created it to provide long term employment for the community. Then in 2023, he undertook the restoration of Rodel House to preserve the most important historic home on the island.
Available year round. Self catering or resident chef. Exclusive hire only.
