Based on over fifty years of research by historian Bill Lawson, the Hebrides People Visitor Centre offers a rich and engaging introduction to the story of the Outer Hebrides. Our exhibitions explore the people and landscapes of the islands, featuring themes such as emigration, geology, travel, and the unique history of St Kilda.
We also run a programme of regular talks at 11am: Monday – Hebridean Ancestry Tuesday – Gaelic Tasting Thursday – Introduction to Harris Tweed Alongside these, we host evening events throughout the season, exploring island history, culture, and Gaelic music.
Visitors can browse a well‑stocked shop with local interest books, croft histories, fiction, Harris Tweed gifts, Hebridean soaps, jewellery, cards by island artists, and more. Teas, coffees, light snacks, and ice cream are available throughout the day.
The centre is also home to Hebrides People ‘Cò Leis Thu?’, our specialist genealogy service for those tracing Western Isles ancestry. Drawing on extensive local records and oral traditions, we can produce detailed family trees reaching back up to seven generations. We encourage anyone wishing to speak with our genealogist to make an appointment before visiting. You can also email an enquiry or explore our online database if you prefer to take forward your own research.
The centre is a great starting point for exploring the rest of Northton, with several beautiful walks and beaches nearby. We welcome visitors to use our parking to help reduce congestion further down the village, and a free walking guide is available to pick up in the centre.
We look forward to welcoming you.
