About

Caolas Gallery is a unique wooden eco-turf roofed yurt, with central light dome.I designed and built the yurt for the 2018 season replacing the historic corrugated iron croft house which had been the Gallery,  opening in 2012. This is now our family home. The Gallery is accessed down a separate path leading to the accommodation yurt and Gallery and overlooking our garden with trees and stream which is in turn the home of our small flock of Cayuga duck and mixed breed chickens.

I had the good fortune to be raised here on the beautiful Isle of Harris from the age of 7 my wife was born here.

The ever changing weather and thus the quality of light on land and water are my motivation.

Here on the outer margins of the British Isles, land and water, light and darkness, sun wind and rain have that elemental quality an extremity to match their location. I try to reflect that in my work. I am a seasoned hill walker and wild camper enabling me to be in the right place at the right time. I frame and print my work in house.

The Gallery is also the selling point for individually hand pleated (plaited) rugs and cushions crafted here on the island from locally woven Harris Tweed.

The circular Yurt Gallery with its sea views and central dome roof window creates a bright and airy exhibition space. A wood burning stove keeps it cosy in cold weather.

A perfect place to come and unwind and browse my work.

We serve teas and coffees and a selection of home baked yummy cakes,; being Gluten Free ourselves we aim to have at least one delicious gluten free choice. Our seating is comfortable and the tables are made from beautiful polished wildwood.

Caolas Gallery is situated 5 miles from Tarbert on the scenic coastal road to the Isle of Scalpay shortly before the bridge. You can't miss our red painted corrugated iron house!
