For small islands, Barra, Vatersay and Mingulay pack a punch with lots of interesting and indeed exhilarating adventures to be had. From watching the beach landing at Barra airport, learning about history at Kisimul Castle or getting out on the water for some coastal adventures, heading on a boat trip to Mingulay, there is a great choice on offer.

We have put a few hidden gems together for you:

Take a hike to Dun a' Chaolais, to the north of Vatersay, has remains of an Iron Age Broch, as well as beautiful views overlooking the Sound of Vatersay
Barra Heritage Centre, in Castlebay, shares the stories of Barras local culture and social history. With two main galleries and a changing programme of Art Exhibitions, Events and history displays, the collections embrace island life and history
To the east of the island in Eoilgarry, you will find Cille Bharra which includes the remains of a medieval church dedicated to St Barr who the island is named from.
Barra’s highest summit, Heaval (383 metres) hosts breath-taking views to to south over Castlebay, to Mingulay and beyond. Just below the summit you will find the statue of the Virgin and Child, known as “Our Lady of the Sea”
Dun Cuier is a well-preserved Iron Age galleried dun. The short climb to this dun give you stunning views across the west of Barra
