Urras Oighreachd Ghabhsainn (Galson Estate Trust) was established in 2007 to manage the 56,000-acre Galson Estate, which runs from Upper Barvas to Port of Ness on the Isle of Lewis, on behalf of and for the community. UOG is the community landowner and is a company limited by guarantee, as well as a registered charity.
The operations of UOG are ably supported by a board of 9 directors, and presently 14 employees (both full and part time) work for the Trust. The work of UOG ensures the community of Galson Estate benefit greatly from community ownership, and UOG deal with crofting, estate and land management business, as well as manage a large range of projects in order to support and develop the area. These include arts & heritage, health & wellbeing and youth engagement programmes, as well as infrastructural developments. Monies accrued from the campsite are invested back into the community of Galson Estate, and also support a local job involved in maintaining the site.
The present UOG building was completed in late 2021, after the original building was lost to fire in 2019. As part of our re-building process, we received grant funding from Highlands and Islands Enterprise for tourism infrastructure, enabling us to construct the public toilet and campervan facilities you see today.
With tourism and its associated facilities being a key focus of our 20-year Strategic Plan, our ‘Visit Galson Estate’ app and website were produced, making it easier for visitors and residents alike to find their way round our spectacular Estate. In these, we highlight local facilities, coastal walks, shops and beaches. You can download the app on Android and Apple devices, and can also visit our website by clicking the link below.
