With an award-winning free augmented reality archaeology app – Outer Hebrides Unearthed enable you to go back in time! Download the app to dig deeper into the islands’ history and prehistory using innovative lifesize digital reconstructions, animations, audio and graphics – all embedded within the landscapes of the Outer Hebrides. Join the trail and scan a code at each site to step inside life-size digital reconstructions.

Launch of the 5 Uist locations in 2021

The app launched in 2021 with the fascinating Bronze Age settlement of Cladh Hallan, South Uist - where some of the earliest known mummified bodies in Europe were discovered. Augmented Reality lets you see the original settlement, as it would have been 3500 years ago, placed upon the modern day landscape. Make your way to four more incredible sites across the South Uist machair and the North Uist moorland: from grand viking halls to monumental Iron Age brochs. Extended locations coming in 2026 and 2027

Travelling across the islands? Look out for four new sites in Barra and Lewis in Summer 2026, and three in Harris in 2027. Discover:

A series of trails to archaeological sites pinpointed on an easy to navigate GPS map, helping you to stay on track
Life size reconstructions of archaeological remains brought to life through Augmented Reality
Exciting digital content including bilingual text and audio, 3D artefacts, and animations all embedded in the landscapes of the Outer Hebrides
