In 1986 Dave gave up his job as a printer in Manchester and came to the Isle of Lewis to earn his living as a scallop diver. He had spent a month working on a scallop diving boat the year before, and fell in love with the island and with the idea of living and working by the sea. A keen conservationist, and having seen the dreadful damage dredgers cause to the seabed, he could see that the most viable and ethical method of collecting scallops was to pick them by hand, and that this was a sustainable industry. Not only could it provide for the future of himself and his family, but the scallops themselves could be managed so that there would always be a plentiful supply. Thirty years later, he is still selling hand-dived scallops. He and his wife Julie run “The Scallop Shack” at Miavaig Pier in Uig where customers can buy the freshest possible scallops, seeing them being removed from the shell, and all ready to add to the frying pan. These are premium quality scallops, rich in omega-3, an excellent source of vitamin B12 and protein, and absolutely delicious!
