Route: North Lewis Coastal Route Map
Start your North Lewis day trip from Stornoway by heading north through crofting townships towards the dramatic Atlantic coast and the Butt of Lewis Lighthouse.
Just before the lighthouse you will pass Port Stoth, a remarkable natural cove where materials for building the lighthouse in the 1800s were landed by boat. It is a reminder of the determination required to construct such an isolated beacon.
At the Butt of Lewis itself, towering cliffs plunge into the Atlantic while seabirds wheel overhead and waves crash against ancient rock. It is one of the most exhilarating viewpoints in the Outer Hebrides.
If conditions are calm, stretch your legs on the Around the Butt of Lewis Walk, a spectacular 3.5 mile circular coastal route. On very windy days it is best admired from a safe distance as the cliffs are steep and exposed.
For something more relaxed, head nearby to Eoropie Beach, one of Lewis’s most beautiful sandy bays. Families can also enjoy a fun stop at Spòrsnis for ten pin bowling.
When hunger calls, drop into the much loved Wobbly Dog Café for coffee, home baking and a delicious lunch.
After lunch, continue your North Lewis adventure with a stop at Loch Stiapabhat Hide in Lionel. This peaceful wildlife spot offers wonderful opportunities to watch birds gathering on the loch throughout the year.
Next, head to Port of Ness, a lively fishing village known to readers of the Peter May Lewis Thrillers. The harbour is full of character and the surrounding coastline is perfect for a wander.
Art lovers should visit Harbour View Gallery, showcasing beautiful work by local artist Anthony Barber inspired by island landscapes and seascapes.
As you drive back to Stornoway, call into Cross Stores to pick up their famous black pudding and pop into Borgh Pottery, where you may even meet the island potter crafting pieces by hand.
Round off your day with dinner at Borve House Hotel, a welcoming Hebridean stop known for excellent island hospitality.
Just along the road stands the impressive Ballantrushal Standing Stone, believed to be the tallest standing stone in Scotland at around six metres high. In prehistoric times it likely served as a sea marker for travellers navigating the coast.
If the evening is clear, finish your North Lewis day trip with a stroll along Barvas Beach, where big Atlantic skies and endless sands create a perfect end to the day before returning to Stornoway.
