Local Island Terms Explained

• Crofthouse - A traditional Hebridean home built on a croft (a small agricultural holding unique to the Scottish Highlands and Islands).
• Machair - A rare, fertile coastal grassland found almost exclusively in western Scotland. In the summer, it is carpeted in vibrant, stunning wildflowers.
• Glamping Pod - Modern, insulated timber cabin. It offers a cosy, warm upgrade from traditional camping with real beds, electricity, and heating.

What’s the difference between self‑catering and a B&B?

Self‑catering gives you a private home with your own kitchen and living space, ideal for longer stays or families. B&Bs offer a room in a hosted home with breakfast included and a more personal, local experience.

Do hotels and inns operate year‑round in the Outer Hebrides?
