World-renowned Harris Tweed® cloth is handwoven at islanders’ homes in the Outer Hebrides. It is the only fabric in the world protected by Act of Parliament. Not only this, the Outer Hebrides has the prestigous accolade of being one of 5 European regions to be designated as a World Craft Region for Harris Tweed. You can discover its story right here in Stornoway, Isle of Lewis.
The Harris Tweed® Story Room is a small exhibition in the beautifully restored Town Hall – near to ferry terminal and bus station. It is hosted at the offices of the Harris Tweed Authority (Guardians of the Orb and brand regulators of the Harris Tweed® industry).
We offer a family-friendly multi-sensory experience and audio tour, which takes you through the history and process of producing our iconic cloth.
There are two working looms – the double-width industry standard and traditional single-width (over 100 years old) still used by independent weavers. We have recently added a warping frame, which sits beside our pirn winder. Don’t know what these are? Don’t worry! Members of our friendly Harris Tweed Authority team are on hand to answer your questions.
Weaving demonstrations occur throughout the summer and we welcome private tours.
You may know the basics of our story or be a Harris Tweed® aficionado, but there is something for everyone to discover at the home of Harris Tweed®.
The Harris Tweed® Story Room has reopened for the season and is available for visiting and live weaving demonstrations again through booking slots available to visitors on our website at www.harristweed.org/visit-us
Tickets are priced at £5, children go free and dog friendly premises.
All proceeds support the maintenance of the Story Room and the activities of the Harris Tweed Authority Educational Trust
