Cliff Studio is the base for full time Isle of Lewis artist’s Margaret Uttley and David Knight. The studio is a converted Black House and is located next to our own house and garden where we live and work full time. The differing seasons have a profound affect on the work we produce. The shear power, energy and dramatic light evident throughout winter contrasts with the colour, calm and shimmering light of the summer months. We feel very lucky to have the opportunity to work all year round in such an amazingly beautiful and inspiring environment.
Whilst interested in similar themes both of us interpret the coastal landscape with a contrasting vision, Margaret’s powerfully observed figurative approach complements the colour and surface movement of David’s abstract paintings.
David writes:
Whilst abstract in essence, the tide, rocks, beach, sea, weather, light are the subject matter of the paintings. Paint is encouraged to run, drip, flood, wash, move across the surface, and against collaged edges, in the same way water behaves as it washes over the beach surface or pools around rocks.
Margaret writes:
Living in the changeable environment of the Outer Hebrides, closely observing and absorbing its dramatic mood swings is the fuel for my paintings, drawings ceramics. With simple mediums of charcoal, graphite, oils, watercolour or the expressive tactile nature of clay, I wish to express and document this unique landscape.
All the work is completely original, sea, coast, landscape paintings, drawings and ceramics produced throughout the year and on display for the public during April through to September each year. Out of season, appointments can be arranged, just email or call us.
Paintings and drawings range in scale from the very small through to the quite large! Prices range from £140 - £3600 for the paintings and drawings. The ceramics range from just £20 - £240. The only printed works available are greetings cards at £3 each.
Cliff Studio is set in a beautiful location of Uig on the West coast of the island, close to Cliff beach and the Atlantic Ocean. We have a good gravelled car park and access is on one level, no steps. We do not offer a public toilet facility, toilets are available just 1 mile away at Cnip campsite.
