About

Exciting news for Calanais! After nearly three decades of welcoming visitors, the Calanais Visitor Centre is undergoing a transformative redevelopment. This ambitious project, led by Urras nan Tursachan (the Standing Stones Trust), will create a state-of-the-art centre, serving both the local community and visitors from around the world.

While the centre is closed from November 2024 to 2026, we're unable to offer any facilities or parking on site.  During this time, the iconic Calanais Standing Stones remain open.  We look forward to welcoming you to our new and improved visitor centre in 2026!

This ambitious redevelopment will transform the centre into a first-class visitor experience.  Plans include expanding the centre to include a new cafe, shop, major new exhibition, versatile function space and improved parking and access.

In preparation for re-opening in 2026, 2025 will be a busy year:

  • Construction works continue: Lewis Builders will be ready to re-open the Visitor centre in 2026
  • New Exhibition designed: our designers - Bright - are busy working on the new and much improved exhibition
  • Access and paths improved: UnT and Historic Environment Scotland are improving the paths to and around the stones
  • Community activities continue:  thanks to funding from the national lottery heritage Fund

It's going to be worth the wait!
