This crossing takes approximately 7 hours, running 7 days a week in the summer and 5 days a week in the winter. The route goes via Lochboisdale in South Uist, but there are also direct sailngs, which take about 5 hours.

You can travel from Castlebay through the chain of islands and cross to the mainland using Caledonian Macbrayne Hopscotch tickets, which give you lots of options.

The ferry terminal is within walking distance to the village shops, cafe, hotels, post office, bank, Tourist Information Centre and bus stop.

If you are taking a car, you are advised to book early as the ferry can be very busy, particularly in the summer season. The drive from Oban to Glasgow/Edinburgh takes approimately 2/2.5 hours. You are required to be at the ferry terminal at least 45 minutes prior to departure.

It is also advisable to check the ferry service status, as ferries can be delayed or cancelled due to adverse weather.
