HISTORY

Flora MacDonald was born near here in 1722. Her part in helping Bonnie Prince Charles escape from Uist “Over the Sea to Skye “ is well known.  Flora was arrested shortly afterwards and taken by ship to London. She was spared imprisonment in the Tower and was allowed to live in lodgings.  She was released the following year under the Act of Indemnity.

WALK 

The walk takes in the Flora Macdonald birthplace monument, quiet roads through crofting communities, the outstanding machair of South Uist and a secluded beach. In spring and summer, you will see a multitude of flowers, and probably see and hear many birds too. Many of these have become rare breeders in much of Britain. More here.
