About

Photograph © David Wilson

The village of Adabroc and Skigersta in the district of Ness were amalgamated to form the village of "Crobost" in Peter May's trilogy. This derelict house was the house that Peter May imagined to be Fin's Aunts house. Set overlooking the bay at Skigersta harbour, the window in between the dormers was Fin's room. Fin went to stay with his aunt, as a youngster, following the death of his parents. It was a cold and miserable place, made colder by an aunt who treated him well enough, but never loved him.

"I had been in my aunt's house before, and always thought it as a cold, miserable place, for all the colourful pots of plastic flowers and fabrics she draped around. There was a chill damp in that house that got into your bones after a while. There had been no fire on all day, and so it seemed even more wretched than usual when she pushed open the door to let us in. The naked bulb in the hall was harsh and bright as we struggled up the stairs with the bag and the case."

Extract from The Blackhouse by Peter May

Why not visit the nearby Breanish Tweed, in Adabroc. It is where you can buy rare tweeds if you visit. You can also take in a weaving display, enjoy a dram of Balvenie and see how your tweed is made.

There is an interesting walk starting at the road end at Skigersta to Tolsta. It is a moderate to difficult walk, but the views are quite stunning. Click here for the route.
