About

My name is Mathilde, and I am a French woman established in the Outer Hebrides since 2019. Falling in love with Scotland a long time ago I finally followed my heart to live my dream and make a living from my passion. I go deep down in myself to create the most sincere and beautiful things.

Making a basket with rope is a process bringing me satisfaction. Shaping it reminds me a potter turning the clay to make a pot. The same circular lines appear, the hands position is very accurate, the handiwork is fully controlled. Every basket I make is unique.

My home is the most important place for me. It is a combination of volumes, textures, shapes, colours collected, gathered, designed, made throughout the years. A painting of a life where every detail is telling a story. To me the aesthetic of an object is as important as its. When I create a design, I start from a shape I imagined and from what for it’s going to be used. But always, the final prototype will consider both: aesthetic and utility. From the smaller ones you can hold in your hand to the biggest ones to store logs or laundry, I produce a large choice of sizes and designs.

After having followed a Herbology course at the Royal Botanic Garden of Edinburgh, I developed an interest for the dyeing power of plants. Since, my multiple reading and tests leaded me to try dyeing on rope. In the Outer Hebrides there is a tradition of Plant dye and I am studying the plants that was used in the past by the weavers to dye the Harris Tweed. Combining the plant dye and the rope make me recreate the pattern I can observe on the beaches, the moor and the landscape.
