This crossing takes approximately 7 hours, running 5 days a week in the winter and 4 days a week in the summer.. The route goes via Castlebay in Barra, but there are also direct sailngs, which take about 5 hours. If you are not such a good sailor, the shorter route via Uig to Lochmaddy may suit better. Please note that this service will not run in the summer season of 2016. It will be replaced by a Lochboisdale to Mallaig service.

You can travel from Lochboisdale through the chain of islands and cross to the mainland using Caledonian Macbrayne Hopscotch tickets, which give you various options.

The ferry terminal is within walking distance to the village shops, cafe, hotel, post office, bank, Tourist Information Centre and bus stop.

If you are taking a car, you are advised to book early as the ferry can be very busy, particularly in the summer season. The drive from Oban to Glasgow/Edinburgh takes approimately 2/2.5 hours. You are required to be at the ferry terminal at least 45 minutes prior to departure.

It is also advisable to check the ferry service status, as ferries can be delayed or cancelled due to adverse weather.
