About

Taigh-Tasgaidh + Ionad-Ealain Taigh Chearsabhagh / Taigh Chearsabhagh Museum & Arts Centre is a thriving centre for heritage and contemporary art that has much to offer to visitors and the local community.  It is a place where people can meet, share ideas, learn new skills and experience cultural interpretation.

Located in Lochmaddy on the Isle of North Uist, the main port of entry to North Uist, Taigh Chearsabhagh incorporates an award-winning museum and gallery which boasts a photographic collection, local artefacts, art and craft workshops, print & darkroom studios, a sculpture trail, café, shop and Post Office.

The centre presents an annual programme of contemporary visual arts and heritage exhibitions, literary and traditional music events, as well as small festivals and conferences.  The island location and environment directly influence the artistic and cultural life of Taigh Chearsabhagh. Our ethos aims to reflect and celebrate the Gaelic language and culture which is integral to the identity of the islands. Events and activities are open to all.

Museum exhibitions explore the social, domestic, economic, cultural and religious life of North Uist, with a variety of fascinating artefacts mainly from the 19th and 20th centuries.  The visual arts programme presents artists’ commissions, residencies and touring exhibitions, complemented by community-focused workshops.  Facilities include a fantastic print workshop and dark room for users to book, and a digital media production company, UistFilm.  Taigh Chearsabhagh also hosts UHI Innse Gall's visual arts degree courses.

Taigh Chearsabhagh's gift shop offers an excellent range of books, jewellery, crafts and textiles, as well as toys and holiday souvenirs, and the local Post Office.  The café is open all year round, where visitors can enjoy a tasty lunch and home baking, with beautiful views across to the Isle of Harris.
