Mark Beaumont Hebridean Way Cycling Challenge
On the 10th and 11th March 2016 Mark Beaumont record breaking endurance cyclist took on the challenge to launch the new Hebridean Way Cycling Route (National Cycle Rout by cycling the full length from Vatersay to the Butt of Lewis in 24 hours. 185 miles, 10 islands, 6 causeways, 2 boat crossings and just 12 hours in the saddle!
Mark flew in to Barra and was greeted by the kids of Eoligarry Primary School who had kindly made him some cards. He set off on this epic journey from Vatersay and was cheered on with the kids from Castlebay School who rode with him for a few miles. Reaching Ardmhor he was taken to Eriskay, on a fantastic trip by rib, thanks to Uist Sea Tours
He was cheered on by the kids at Daliburgh school, South Uist who had made some great posters and gave him a banana and water to keep his strength up! Racing through Benbecula, following the route along the West coast, cossing over the causeway to Grimsay and then reaching Paible, North Uist as the light was beginning to fade. The kids from Paible School cycled with him for a short while (the kids cycled for the Million Miles for Ellie charity) and he stopped and chatted to them briefly. Then he was on his way for the final stint to Berneray, making it with enough light to get over the Sound of Harris.
Starting at dawn on Friday in Leverburgh, Harris he was joined by cyclists in Tarbert for a few miles and then raced on up to Leurbost, Lewis. Here a couple of cyclists joined him and then on to the Callanish Stones for a press stop (and a quick bite to eat in the Calanais Visitor Centre). The Kids at Shawbost school cheered him on and the last leg up to the Butt of Lewis, he was joined by some more cyclists. Awaiting him at the Butt of Lewis, was a welcome party to congratulate him on his epic journey, From there he was driven (no we didn’t make him cycle) to the Isle of Harris Distillery to formally launch the Hebridean Way Cycling route.
Thanks to Mark Beaumont and well done to complete the challenge! Thanks to all who helped to make this event a success!
