About

Location 10

Loch Druidibeg is a large freshwater loch on South Uist surrounded by heather moorland and rugged hills on the East and croft land on the West. The low lying moorland is the breeding ground for short-eared owl, merlin and hen harrier. Golden eagles frequent the ridges to the South and white-tailed eagle are often seen flying between east and west as they follow the shore of the loch across the island. A path leads across a peninsula that juts out into Loch Druidibeg to Stilligarry but it is also worth walking along the quiet single track road towards Loch Sgioport.

When to visit?

Golden eagles and white-tailed eagles are present throughout the year. Hen harrier, short-eared owl and Merlin are most often seen during the Spring and Summer.

Spotting Tip

Female hen harriers are easily distinguished from buzzards by their slimmer build and white rump. With their pale blue-grey plumage, male hen harriers look more like a large gull with black wing tips.

Other wildlife

Black and red-throated divers breed in the area.

How to get there?

Turn east off the A865 one mile north of Stilligarry, three miles South of Loch Bi and follow the single track road for one mile towards Loch Sgioport until you reach a car park on your right near the shore of Loch Druidibeg.
