About

Described by The Times as 'the ultimate Hebridean hideaway', The Happy Bishop is a striking, contemporary and energy efficient home in a dramatic setting, based in Uig on the Valtos / Kneep / Reef peninsula (which is in one of Scotland’s National Scenic Areas).  Remote, wild and peaceful.  Nature in abundance.

A thriving crofting community surrounded by spectacular mountains, rugged coastline and with stunning white sand beaches; the Uig area makes a perfect holiday destination. The area also provides easy access up to both North Lewis and down to South Harris, as well as only being a short trip into Stornoway.

Clad in Siberian larch and with a sloping, living roof, the Happy Bishop blends in naturally with its surroundings whilst offering luxury accommodation and stunning views.  Underfloor heating (powered by an air source heat pump) keeps the floors warm underfoot and the floor to ceiling windows improve solar gain. Built with sustainable living in mind.

The open plan living room, dining room and kitchen is the focal point of the house with its picture window island views and its sliding doors opening on to the decked balcony.

The kitchen is fully equipped with everything you might need for dining in, including store cupboard oils and spices and even a slow cooker for homely meals to come back to at the end of the day.  There are cookery books for inspiration and we also provide a picnic bag and flask for those days when you are out and about.

The dining area, as well as having a large table with two comfortable chairs for dining, also has two wicker chairs with Harris tweed cushions where you can sit with your morning coffee/tea watching the wildlife, the sea and the big skies. We provide ground coffee for the cafetière and a Nespresso machine (with a selection of recyclable vertuo pods) as well as a selection of teas (caff / decaff) which should set you up for the day ahead.

The seating area has a large comfortable sofa and there is a big bookshelf stocked with information about the local area as well as a book swap shelf and other gems.  Free WIFI, a smart television with streaming services, and an Anker Bluetooth speaker keep you connected.

A partly screened platform at one end of the room leads to an office/chill out space. You may wish to take an afternoon nap or start writing that book you have always wanted to write!

There is a king sized bed in the bedroom and built in wardrobes with ample hanging space and drawers (including a hair dryer and iron/ironing board). The Jack and Jill bathroom embodies luxury, with a large walk in shower with constant hot water and natural, ethical toiletries. Egyptian cotton towels and luxurious bedding ensure a good night’s sleep.

There is a spacious hall area with yoga mats and mindful colouring books as well as lots of books and games to enjoy in the seating area. The Happy Bishop will help you to relax and recharge. You may not even want to leave the house!

Outside we have a fully fenced garden and we offer the use of a kayak to our guests. We also have an outside hose to wash down any swimwear/wetsuits or muddy dogs and a clothes line for hanging things out to dry.

We can accommodate up to two guests and furry friends are welcome too!

The Uig area is rich in history and archaeology, as well as being home to fascinating creatures like white-tailed sea eagles, golden eagles, corncrakes, cuckoos, otters, seals and more. Embraced by breathtaking landscapes and mountains, untamed coastlines and pristine white shell sand beaches; the area beckons travellers seeking an exceptional getaway.

The hen harriers, great skuas, gannets, arctic terns, basking sharks, minke whales, orcas, the Gaelic language and music, the untamed open spaces, rocky sea stacks, unspoiled land and nature all contribute to the beauty of the area. Here, time flows to a more tranquil rhythm, enabling you to immerse yourself in the area’s extraordinary charm.  With its awe-inspiring landscapes, historical landmarks, abundant, breathtaking wildlife and some of the most magnificent beaches, the area caters to a diverse range of interests. Whether you're drawn to hiking, wild swimming, fishing, snorkelling, kayaking, or capturing nature's beauty through your lens or simply enjoying the serene panorama through the picture window or from the deck of the Happy Bishop, there is something special for every visitor.

Welcome!
